"A Walk Through St. Louis Cemetery No. 1"
This was my very first time being a part of "The Sketchbook Project" and I was actually very excited to contribute to it, because I'm not used to having such an open-ended, no holds barred, project to do. However, I did come to find that such an open and free-range project was much more intimidating than I had originally believed it would be. This is because, I could do anything, but -as a student- I am introduced to so many different techniques and ways of doing things, so there were so many things that I could bring to the table in relation with this project. I brought my techniques of books arts (making a hardcover and even wrapping them in hand-marbled paper, which was made by myself. I then did a "perfect binding" on the entire book, this holding it together. HOWEVER, before putting it together, I sketched the imagery, taking elements from the photos that I had taken on a recent trip to New Orleans, where in I visited the famous Saint Louis Cemetery No.1. I basically did spot illustrations, because I wanted the book to be seen as though it were there with me, like I were sketching things as I was walking through, so they're quick and, while not all accurate, they still give an idea of things that I saw and found interesting. So there is signage, historical information, tombs that stood out to me the most, statues, and even patterns that I found in the gates that would surround a tomb. Also, the book is slightly beat up, I feel, but I was rough in the making of it for a reason, because as I said before, I wanted it to look as though I had it with me when walking through.
