"The Art of Drinking Absinthe"
This was one of the first introduction pieces for me when it came to editorial illustration. The basis of this project, was to illustrate for a story, something that would give the viewer an idea about what they were going to be getting into before they even read the first sentence.
For my piece, I wanted to include this framing effect that would be reminiscent of Alphonse Mucha's own work. So I did some work with framing ideas, trying to take the glass of Absinthe and present it as this precious beautiful thing. Finally, in meeting with my professor, she re-introduced me to vintage botanical illustrations, which also show the inner workings of the plants that they are presenting. This helped influence what became the tone and feeling of the piece itself. Originally, I had been considering to cover the entire piece in resin, but at the end of the day, I felt that it would take away from the old, vintage feeling that I was trying to achieve with the piece.
